Derrek Pugh of Blythewood, SC Announces His Candidacy for Richland County Council District 2
Columbia S.C. - Derrek Pugh, a native of Dillon, S.C., and has been a resident of Richland County for the past 20 years. Derrek earned a Bachelor’s degree from Benedict College and a Master's from Webster University. Derrek currently serves as a leader in program development for children in the Greater Columbia and surrounding areas. Derrek became the youngest Deputy Director in the history of the South Carolina Youth Challenge Academy, an entity of the South Carolina National Guard.
Derrek, is looking forward to bringing an option to the district. “For too long, all of district 2 has been underrepresented. It’s time we have a representative that will represent all of District 2 not just a part of the district.”
Derrek is extremely involved in his local county government, serving Commissioner on the Planning Commission, and former Vice Chairman of the Board of Zoning and Appeals for the Town of Blythewood, SC. He also serves as a board member for the Ray of Hope USDA feeding program, the Carolina Legacy Council and the Capital City Club Membership Committee in Columbia. He is also an adjunct professor at Benedict College, in the Recreation and Sports Management program.
“I’ve always served my community, it’s time I take my service to the next level by running for public office. I don’t take this job lightly; I see a better future for our district, and I want to help put the plan in place. A lot is on the line this election, legacy, quality of life, and OUR FUTURE. I will unite the district as one, creating ONE Richland County that will work with all districts to make a better county as a whole.”
Derrek has been recognized as one of South Carolina's rising stars, as a member of the SC Black Pages 2018 Top 20 under 40 professionals in business class. He is also a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. He enjoys spending time with friends and family but most importantly his wife!
